Trying CalJOBS again

It’s been a long time since I’ve gone to the CalJOBS website, to search for a job. I pretty much stopped looking at right after it had that little problem that allowed people who are not you to view the personal information that you put into the CalJOBS website.

At that time, I hadn’t given it very much of my information, so I had little to worry about. However, if I was one of the many people who had put a resume on CalJOBS, with all the details about where I worked, and when, and my home address and phone number… and I learned that strangers (who were not employers) were able to access it (and maybe even change it), I would have been extremely upset.

It’s the little things, like, I don’t know… website security… that let me know if I can trust a job website or not.

Anyway, today I decided to check out CalJOBS, just for the heck of it. I wasn’t expecting much, because all of my previous job searches at this website were disappointing. Not one job that I was qualified for appeared.

Today, after a few attempts while I tried to recall what my password was, I found something new at CalJOBS. They seem to have increased their security. I was asked to make a new user name, and given some minimal instructions about how to create one that would be …safer, I assume. Must make a new password, too. That’s kind of a shame, after all the time I spent trying to remember it!

Next is a drop down box that I must select a security question from. After choosing one, I have to enter the answer into not one, but two, boxes. This is followed by a second drop down box, where I must select from a different set of security questions. Again, I must put the answer to this second security question into two boxes.

Oh.. looks like I didn’t quite create a password that was up to their specifications. I try again. Nope. Two tries later, it is accepted.

Now, I am back to the page that will let me click on a button that says “Browse Jobs By Catagory”. The red text at the top of the page reminds me to log out if I am using a public computer. It also warns me that I need to access CalJOBS at least once every 60 days, if I would like employers to look at my resume. Interesting. Is this so the employers are certain that the applicant they are considering is still interested in the job? Or is this one more way that CalJOBS can enforce that people on Unemployment Insurance are continuing to search for jobs? Perhaps it’s a little bit of both.

I click on the bubble that says “Browse Jobs by Category”, and hope for the best. I am fully expecting to find CalJOBS to be the same desert it was last time.

This brings me to a page where there is a list of job categories, with a little number next to them to indicate how many jobs are hiding inside. Nothing says “Writer”. I click on the category “Arts, Design, Entertainment, Media”. Will this be close enough?

Although this category has several sub-categories, there are only four actual jobs here, according to what the little numbers say. Unfortunately, this turns out to be a lie, and there are only three actual jobs here.
* PV System Designer
I’ve no idea what this even means! Reading over the description doesn’t clarify much to me. Something about “preform engineering site visits”, “research local and national code requirements”, and “AutoCAD”. I don’t understand how this job could be considered part of “Arts, Design, Entertainment, Media”.

* Retail Project Merchandiser
Check out this flowery script: “There is a measurable amount of satisfaction in knowing that your ideas, talents, and experience can make a difference. (This particular company) and our (related?) companies embrace diversity and the development of a performance driven culture and company. We strive to attract the most talented candidates to join our team, because we value people as our most strategic and competitive asset. Simply put, we believe in our associates and invest in them accordingly.”

Sure, you do! Would you mind telling me what the job happens to be?
“Purpose: A Retail Project Merchandiser can be responsible for merchandising Client products at retail accounts to ensure Client standards are met. The ideal candidate is self-motivated and driven to succeed. This person should have strong communication skills, and the ability to build relationships with store personnel. They must possess excellent organizational skills and have the ability to work independently. Job duties vary from project to project and these associates are encouraged to only sign up for projects for which they possess the necessary skill set.
Job Responsibilities: * Distribution audits* New Item Cut Ins* Resets* Display Building* POS Placement* Pharmacy Detailing* Assembly* Mystery Shopping* Customer Relations* Reporting Administration* Safety Job Requirements * High School Diploma or G.E.D.* Strong analytical and problem solving skills* Strong communication skills both written and verbal* Strong critical thinking skills* Must be able to present information to store management as needed and be able to participate in meetings with other business partners* Must be able to prioritize effectively, work independently or as part of a project team to complete multiple tasks concurrently*”

Um… I still don’t know exactly what the job is. But, I’ve got enough information here to make me certain that it is not actually a job in “Arts, Design, Entertainment, Media”. Well, not really. I think this job might include setting up in store displays. Is that passing for “design” now?

Master Control Operator

My, that sounds powerful! “I am your Master Control Operator! Dance, minions, dance!”

This job happens to be from a company I applied to once before, years ago, before I started teaching. It’s a television news company. Last time, I was trying to get into what amounted to Data Entry. I got as far as the interview, and that was it. No job. Therefore, I won’t be applying for this one either. Especially since the job description says:

“If you are reliable, apply attention to detail and possess the ability to make decisions quickly under pressure, you may love this job.”

You may…. or you may not? This job wants a person who is already good at using whatever a “Harris automated system” happens to be. I don’t have a clue what that is.

Today’s search of the “Arts, Entertainment, Design, Media” category resulted in a big, fat, zero. I expected this result, but I am still disappointed.

There are 47 jobs in the “Education” category. Most of them seem to be part time jobs. The only two jobs for teachers of the Arts are going to pay “depending on experience”. One is for a “full time” lecturer, and the other is for a “part time” lecturer. Zero are asking for people to actually go into the schools, and teach Art, Music, or Drama to students. Sad. There are also a lot of ads for high school teachers of things like Science, Math, Agriculture, and assorted other things I cannot teach, even if I still wanted to teach, which I don’t.

There is a slightly terrifying ad wanting a “child care worker”. The job discription says: “The Childrens Activities Coordinator is responsible for the safe and appropriate care of children 6 years and older who are left at the Visitor Center for a brief time less than 3 hours while the parent/guardian is visiting an incarcerated friend or family member.”

It pays a little more than ten bucks an hour, and whoever gets this job “Must work every Sat. and Sun.and all major holidays.” This job is not for me. Imagine, sitting three hours in a prison environment, with a child that has never seen you before, as the child’s parent goes to see a relative who has been incarcerated. How does one answer the child’s inevitable questions about why he or she cannot go see said relative? This is a nightmare of a job.

In other words, CalJOBS has updated it’s security, but still isn’t offering any decent jobs for me.

Looking for a job?

Looks like the CalJOBS site is up and running again. It’s up to you to decide wether or not your trust it enough to put your resume and personal information into it. Remember, it was down for a while because of a little problem that allowed random users to view other people’s resumes. Oops!

I just went there and looked through the site, and I am not impressed. First of all, there aren’t any more education jobs listed there now than were there before the site went down. Also, for some reason, the site is no longer allowing me to use the “back” button on my browser to go back and forth between the list of jobs and a particular job listing. Not impressed at all!

Maybe you aren’t looking for a job right now, but you have an interview (or more than one interview) coming up. I hate interviews. I don’t like the uncertainty of having to guess what kind of answer a possible employer is looking for. I’m the type of person that you can drop into a room full of complete strangers, and I will quickly and easily find myself in a conversation with at least one of them. But, somehow, interviews make me extremely nervous. Perhaps it’s because so much is riding on those precious few minutes that a potential employer is granting me to prove that I am the person who should be hired for this job. It’s especially hard when the job is one that I really want, or absolutely need, to get.

Do you feel like you need some help with interview questions? Here is a fabulous resource for you to check out. Daniel Johnson Jr. has a website called Get That Job! Right now, he is posting one short video every day, for the entire month of November. Each video gives a great example about how to answer some of the most common questions an interviewer may ask you. I find his videos to be extremely helpful, and I highly recommend checking them out.

CalJOBS is harmful

If you have been reading this blog for a while, you might remember me mentioning a site called CalJOBS. This is the site that the government strongly encourages people to sign up for when they first apply for Unemployment Insurance. This is the job site that, so far, has produced the least amount of jobs for me to apply for.

Thanks to “Savage”, a friend who left me a comment on this blog, I became aware of another small, teeny, tiny problem with CalJOBS.

Check this out. The government has shut down the CalJOBS website because “A glitch discovered on Cal Jobs website could be at risk for identity theft.” Apparently, “a man” was on CalJOBS, and he accidently came across this “glitch” that, oops!, allowed him to view other people’s information through the CalJOBS site. Seems the state of California shut down the site after that.

Here’s a fun quote from the article: “While there’s no evidence that anyone has had their identity stolen, consumer counselors say that it’s a good idea to look over your credit report, just in case.” Doesn’t that just make you feel all safe and secure? Unemployed people desperately seeking financial help from the US Government don’t have enough problems, it seems. No, we also have to worry about if some nefarious person decided to use the private information they “accidently” found on this site to ruin our credit ratings, or, potentially steal our identities, in addition to every other worry we all are facing.

I went to the CalJOBS website today, just to see if it was still down. It was. There is no indication about when, or if, it will return. It is just “temporarily unavailable” because “of a few isolated cases of unauthorized access to posted résumé information.”

The CalJOBS site claims that “Such access was available to a limited number of résumé postings and did not compromise confidential information contained in the system such as Social Security numbers.” So, in other words, if you happened to put your resume on CalJOBS, don’t worry, they didn’t accidently give out your social security number. Just your name, home address, telephone number, cell phone number, and a list of places you used to work at. Nothing important, really. Not anything that could cause you harm.

Right now, I am very glad that I never got around to posting a resume on CalJOBS. I might have posted one, if, you know, I found any job listings there that I was both qualified for and interested in, but that didn’t happen. I’m still very nervous, though, after hearing this news. If the state run job listing website was unwittingly giving random strangers access to people’s personal information, and everybody who signed up there also had to go online to sign up for Unemployment Insurance….. how do I know that some stranger doesn’t have all my personal information right now?

Thanks, State of California, for being incompetent, and giving me more to stress out about!

Weekly Job Round-Up

Here is a quick overview of what I found this week. You may have already read the (somewhat) popular saga: “Is This Spam?”, which tells you the adventure I had fighting with the Spammer who wrote one of the ads I found this week.

Let me start off by saying that CalJOBS, the government run job site I look at, has had exactly zero new jobs to offer under their category that includes the jobs in Education. Zero! All week long! I hunted around, and found that they do have a category to look in for jobs for child care workers. It’s well hidden, and I had to dig around for it. Finding it didn’t matter, though, because they have had exactly zero jobs, at all, in that category all week long.

SLOJobs is at least attempting to help me this week. They send me emails, almost daily, about jobs they are listing. Of course, most of those jobs aren’t things I qualify for, or aren’t things that will allow me to pay my bills. It’s still an improvement over what CalJOBS had to offer this week!

SLOJobs emailed me:
* Part time Cashier at a local car wash (not enough hours)
* Medical Equipment Customer Rep (I’m not qualified for)
* Financial Services Rep (numbers are the bane of my existence)
* Code Enforcement Officer for the local Government (not qualified)
* City Clerk for local Government (I’m not qualified for that either)

They also emailed me that there were jobs at Reader’s Choice, again. I already wrote in this blog about my terrible experiences working for that awful company. I’m certainly not going back to them!

One more email told me that there was someone looking for a Nanny. This was a CEO type person, who worked in an office for a company that I think sells auto parts. That person wants a Nanny to care for her infant, and her four year old IN THE OFFICE, making sure that the children don’t disturb the person seeking a Nanny. It sounded like a nightmare of a job!

SLOJobs wasn’t sending me anything having to do with education. There is a good reason for that. They don’t have any of those jobs!

Out of the pile of crap jobs, emerged two unexpected gems. I’ve already applied for a job as a “Bilingual Customer Service Representative” for an eye doctor’s office. I like that SLOJobs allows you to click a button, and *poof* your resume goes right to the employer. I like that SLOJobs sends you a confirmation email, saying that yes, they did send your resume off to the employer. I don’t like that none of the employers ever contact me, not even to say that they hired someone else.

On Friday, SLOJobs emailed me a job listing that looked interesting. It is for a local Elder Care Center, that wants a person for the Front Desk. I like the idea of having a job that actually provides help to people, so I am intrigued. Oddly enough, I cannot apply for this one online. They want a person to arrive at the door, resume in hand, ready to talk to an actual person. What a novel approach! I found the job too late to do this on Friday, but tomorrow, Monday, I will be driving right over there to apply.

I will let you know later on if either of these two apparent gems were worth anything. They might be just more shiny plastic, there to distract me.

Craigslist didn’t provide much this week.
* College Financial Advisor (numbers are the bane of my existence)
* Grade Potential Tutor (Again? Still not interested)
* Autism Consultant (I don’t qualify. It’s part-time, somehow)
* The “DO YOU NEED A JOB” ad that inspired the “Is This Spam?” saga.

Maybe next week will be better.

Weekends

Just to test a theory, I decided to look for work today, to see if any new jobs are posted on Saturdays.

SLOJobs has nothing new at all, whatsoever, under “education”.

CalJOBS had a few new jobs:
* STAR program manager
It says this job is “temporary”, so I’m already not interested. From what I can tell from the description, they want someone to seek out college students who are about to become Math or Science teachers, and set them up with internships somewhere. It also mentions words like “mentor” and “research”. Yeah, I don’t qualify.

* Pre-Doctoral Intern, Counseling SVCS
I’m not entirely certain what that title means. This job is also listed as “temporary”. You might work “1-20″ hours a week. Basically, they want a person who has a degree in counseling to work with students at the local college. I think. I don’t qualify for that one either.

* Instructor, AG Education & Comm
This job is listed as “long term”, whatever that means. Pay is “depending on experience”, a phrase I hate to see sitting where the rate of pay is supposed to appear. Just tell people what the job pays, so they can figure out if it’s worth everybody’s time and effort to go through the application/interviewing process! In this case, for me, it doesn’t really matter. I cannot teach Agriculture classes at the local college. I’m not qualified for that either.

Craigslist has nothing new under education. However it did have this fine job listed under the general job category:

* Signature Gatherers Needed To Legalize Marijuana!

It says: “Great Opportunity for XTRA INCOME! State Ballot Initiative Campaign Just Getting Under Way! Paid per signature & self-employed! Registered Voters ONLY! ” Oooh.. just what I need, some “XTRA” income!

Compensation is listed twice. First it says : “Per Signature! Right Now 70c on 2 issues! But more on the way & could go UP in price!”
Then, later on it says: “All Petitioners are Paid Per ( .70 ) Signature within a few days. Turn ins twice a week.” So, basically, this job is commission based. Oh boy! My favorite!

Oddly enough, I signed this petition just last week. The man holding the clipboards seemed nice, and was talkative. He asked me “So, what exciting thing has happened for you this week?”

I responded with “Well, I’m unemployed now. That’s new and exciting!”

He then asked me if maybe I might want to work getting signatures on petitions. My answer at the time was “Maybe, I’ll have to think about it”. Thinking over! It looks like a dream job. Sign me up!

Slim Pickings at CalJOBS

When I first applied for Unemployment Insurance, as you may recall, I was encouraged to sign up for a job listing website called CalJOBS. Which I did. I thought that the job site created by the Employment Development Department , (The EDD), would be the best place to look for a new job as a teacher.

But so far? CalJOBS has turned out to have the least job offerings for education jobs of the many job sites I’ve been haunting. I’m disappointed. If there are no teaching jobs to be found at the Government run job search site, this has to mean it is because there are no more teaching jobs left to find. California, in it’s infinite wisdom, has cut these jobs right out of existence, dismissed thousands of teachers, and gone on it’s merry way, never once thinking about the consequences of it’s callous actions.

My search of CalJOBS this week offered nothing at all for me. Most of the jobs under the Education category were the exact same jobs that I saw last week. Here they are, if you want to read about those. Few of those jobs actually involved teaching in the first place. They aren’t any more appetizing the second time around.

This week two new jobs appeared:

* Family Advocate I, II
This is yet another job from the EOC. Which makes me wonder, why, exactly, they have such a high turn over in staff that suddenly, each and every one of these positions needs filling? I don’t have the degree they are asking for to apply for this job, either, but what I do have might be considered “or equivalent degree”. It is a full time job, and the pay is nice. The job itself is located in a town that isn’t the safest place to work, and is far enough away to make a commute expensive. I actually did commute to and from that town in the past, and my car burned a heck of a lot of gas.

But, do I want to be a “Family Advocate”? I read the job description and find terms like “weekly case management meetings”, “participates in School Student Study Team”, and “provides additional early intervention through in-home support.” In home support? Is this job basically the person one calls when you are “having a domestic”? No, thanks.

* Community Education Coordinator
This is for a local hospital. (No, not the one I talked to when I was searching for information about the job at the Mental Health Hospital). This job description says things like “assessing, performing, and documenting community education needs.” What do we need? More teachers in the public schools! More teachers hired to work in Special Education classrooms. This community needs the government to stop cutting teaching jobs. That’s what we need! Somehow, I bet that is not the answer this employment situation wants a person to find. “Experience with group facilitation and coordinating education programs”. I don’t exactly have that, in so many words, on paper. This is not the job for me.

And, that’s all folks! Nothing more to be found this week. Keep tuning in to “Between Gigs” for updates on “The Quest for a New Job”, and other blogs about surviving unemployment.

Will CalJOBS help me find a job?

If you have been following this blog, you may recall that when I applied for Unemployment Insurance I was encouraged to sign up for CalJOBS. I’ve done that, and I’ve been searching it quite a lot from September 27, 2009 to October 3, 2009.

CalJOBS is another job site where you need to log in if you want to see the jobs. So, again, I cannot link to what I found there, but I can describe it for you. To sign in yourself, look for the box that says “JOB SEEKER”. Underneath it, you can click on one box that says “Register”. Then… register. After that, you can just click on the box that says “Log In” each time you visit this site.

Once inside, you get a selection of bubbles to choose from. I like to click on the one that says “Browse Jobs by Category”. From here, you get a long list of different categories, and I always click on the one that is called “Education, Training & Library”.

I must say, I am not impressed with what CalJOBS had to offer me.

One quick glance tells me that there are eleven jobs under the “Education, Training & Library” category, which sounds promising.
Clicking on that link brings me to another page where the jobs are broken down even further into more categories.

“Special Education” has exactly zero jobs. No help there at all.

“Teacher Assistants”, (which is what paraeducators used to be called), has two job listings. The first one says “Instructional Aide”, and…. no way! This job is for the exact same school district I just lost my job from. I glance over the job, debating the wisdom in applying at the same district that has already expressed extreme disinterest in having me work there. Then I notice that the application materials had to have been turned in no later than “4PM on September 30, 2009″. Pretty sure I found this job around 6PM on September 30, 2009. Too late! This job has already expired, and become “Not a job”.

The second job listed is “Instructional Aide I, II, III, IV”, whatever that means. The website they have listed is for a place called EOC, which seems to have been formally known as “Economic Opportunity Commission”. Click… click.. click. I think this job is actually for either a Teacher Aide job in an infant/toddler classroom… or it might be for a bus aide for the same infant/toddler classroom. Or, both, possibly? I’m not entirely sure.

It is located in Paso Robles, which is about 40 minutes away from where I live. Once again, this job is NOT an actual teaching job, or even close to what I was doing before I became unemployed.

It turns out that the “I, II, III, IV” refers to starting pay. The lowest rate is too low for me to be able to pay my bills, but the highest rate is nice, and slightly higher than what I was making when I had a job, assuming they decide to pay me the absolute highest rate one can earn at this job. Closer examination tells me that I don’t actually have the qualifications, (on paper, that is) they want for people who they hire at the highest level. In reality? I am really good at taking care of other people’s children, and have years of experience as a teacher in day care, with about two years of experience entirely with infants and toddlers. I can only qualify for the lowest ranking of pay, and it is significantly less than what I was making at my previous job.

This is a hourly, full time job. It says work will be “Monday- Friday” and that “hours will vary” sometime between 9 AM to 6 PM. Does that mean people who work there are basically shift workers, who will never be able to predict when they will be expected to work? I’m shaking my head at this. Been there, done that, didn’t enjoy it one bit. This is not the job for me.

So, there’s two of the eleven jobs CalJobs had to offer under the category “Education, Training & Library”. The rest? I don’t even remotely qualify for. This is what I mean:

* Assistant Superintendent/ Vice President, Administrative Services
Oddly enough, this is also for the same school district I used to work in. I’ve no idea what to make of that.

*Construction PT Pool (Industrial Wiring)
This is NOT a teaching job! Not even remotely.

*OST (Office Skills Training) Instructor
This is a teaching job, but it is for teaching office skills, which I do not have. I’m certain I could figure it out, but I have nothing on paper to prove it. Oh, look! This job is listed twice. It appears under the category “Vocational Education” and also under the category “Educational, Vocational, and School Councilors”. There aren’t actually eleven jobs listed under “Education, Training & Library”, there are only ten! This is misleading.

*Staff Development/ Training Coordinator
Also for the EOC. This job is listed as “temporary”. That is all I need to see. I am hoping to find full time work.

* Teacher I, II, III
This is also for the EOC, and it looks like this is also for an infant/toddler classroom. It appears to be full time, but again, is shift work. They want you there Monday through Friday, 8AM to 5PM, but “hours vary”. Level III would provide me with a range of pay that gets close to what I was making, but, unfortunately, they want to hire someone with a Masters Degree for that level. Honestly, a Masters Degree, for a day care teacher?

* Construction PT Pool (Welding)
Again, NOT a teaching job. Why is this listed here? What does “pool” mean? Either they want underwater welders, or they just want to have a bunch of back up people they can call on if the people who actually get hired are out for a day. This is “Not really a job”

* Microbiology Part Time Pool
I’m not even close to qualifying for that one.

* Hospitality Part Time Pool for Cuesta College
Hospitality instructors are wanted for “Possible” part time teaching assignments in the Business Education Division. So, it’s possibly a job, and it’s possibly “Not a job” at all. My degree is not in business, so I don’t qualify for this either.

* Economics Part Time Pool also for Cuesta College
Same story here… I don’t hold a degree in Economics, its part time, and its only a “possible” job. This is also “NOT really a job”.

This concludes what I found last week when looking for a job at CalJobs. I am not impressed. I am disappointed that the very job site that I was highly encouraged to sign up for when I applied for Unemployment Insurance has so little to offer me. I am convinced that there are no more jobs for teachers in California.
