Piece

I am still working as a freelance writer at this moment. So far, I love it. There have been times when I needed to find my motivation to continue writing, as opposed to, say, continuing to play World of Warcraft for another hour. But, for the most part, I am having a good time. Again, the job has an endpoint, and I am aware of that. My employer has offered me extra work, and then some more extra work, and I think that is a good sign of things to come.

There is something very interesting in the big blue pamphlet that I am so glad to have found. For those of you new to this blog, the big blue pamphlet is one of the first things I was sent when I signed up for Unemployment Benefits. It’s an informational booklet, designed to answer questions about the whole process. Inside, there is this lovely word: “Piecework”.

Page 16 of the booklet states:
“If you receive pay for piecework, report the total amount paid in the week it was earned. Include the word “piecework” in item 6b along with the employer’s name”.

I had been wondering just how I was supposed to let the EDD know that I had been hired as a (temporary) freelance writer. I considered trying to figure out how many hours I worked on it, and also thought maybe it would want me to somehow convert the pay into hours. Nope! I am being paid a specific dollar amount for a specific amount of writing. This means I am being paid by the piece. I am doing “piecework”!

Every two weeks, I must fill out another Continued Claim Form, and send it to the EDD (the government) to review. I will have to do this every two weeks until my Unemployment Insurance runs out, or, I manage to get a job that is going to sustain me like the full time job that I once had. In general, when it comes to filling out government forms, it’s best and smartest to find a way to make everything fit “into the box”. It seems that the EDD wants me to call the freelance writing I am doing “piecework”. I assume that if I was a carpenter being paid by each piece of cabinet I put together that would also be called “piecework”.

That lovely little word “piecework” is going to make things so much easier for me! Easy is good, especially when dealing with paperwork from Unemployment Insurance.

I’ve got one more little update, but it’s not as important as “piecework”. In a previous blog, I mentioned that I had a little coupon from Baja Fresh. I had to go online, sign up on their website, and write a code down onto the coupon itself, before bringing the coupon into the store. Seems I have been misreading the coupon. Disregard what I put in my previous blog. The correct amount was it gives you five dollars off of a ten dollar (or more) purchase.

I am happy to announce it worked, with no questions asked. Shawn and I went to Baja Fresh to eat dinner after watching Avatar in 3D. Both of us had friends rave about how awesome that movie was, and that we needed to see it in 3D before it left the theaters, and this made it seem like as much of a cultural event as we get nowadays. So, we saw the movie, (yes, the movie was awesome), and then went to Baja Fresh afterwards. We spent about ten bucks, used the coupon, and immediately got five bucks off. No hassle, and no questions asked. It’s nice when places live up to the promise they print on their coupons.

Baja Fresh

Got an interesting coupon recently. Baja Fresh is, for those unfamiliar, a mexican food chain that exists out here in California. I’ve no idea where else you can find one. They, like several other fast food places, have been sending out various coupons to entice customers to come to their fast food restaurant, instead of some other one.

Anyhow, recently go this coupon from Baja Fresh that says :
“$5.00 off any purchase of $10.00 or more”

In order to use this coupon, you have to go online, to www.bajafresh.com, and join their club. It is extremely easy to do, and almost instantly, you get a code. Write the code on the coupon, and bring it with you when you go to Baja Fresh. Easy! Oh, and of course, you have to use it before the expiration date. It expires February 15, 2010. There is one in town, so this will work. Just like that, cheap eats!

All of that was very straight forward and simple. The form I filled out when I joined their club asked for my email address, and I gave them one I use for that sort of thing. Will I get any interesting coupons from Baja Fresh in my email? Do they give you free food on your birthday like some Hometown Buffet does, when you join the club? I’ve no idea.

I will let you know what I get, if anything.

Cheap Eats for Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving, to all who celebrate it!

Today’s “Cheap Eats” blog is about places to go for Thanksgiving dinner, that won’t cost you a fortune that you don’t happen to have, now that you are unemployed/ underemployed.

* Family first
There is someone in every family that makes themselves the person to visit. This is the person who starts planning the menu sometime in October. This is the person who enjoys cooking up a feast to feed everyone in the whole family. This is the person who has a home large enough fit the entire family, and then some.

Every family has different “rules” about how this works. Some families want everyone to bring a dessert or bottle of wine along with them to Thanksgiving dinner. It generally doesn’t cost too much to run to the local grocery store and pick up a pie, or at least some brownies. Trader Joe’s is a great place to pick up that “Two Buck Chuck” (inexpensive bottle of wine). If your family is aware that you aren’t working right now, they might be cool if you simply show up on time, and just bring yourself.

Upside: Thanksgiving is a great time to spend with family, eating great food, catching up, and watching football. Also, you are likely to get sent home with lots of yummy leftovers, which will feed you for the next few days.

Downside: You have to spend the day with your family. For some people, the stress involved in doing that is not worth the potential possibility of free food.

* Hometown Buffet (also known as Old Country Buffet, or Country Buffet), has a very nice Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving. You can click around on their website to find one of their Buffets near you. I would recommend calling them to make sure they are, in fact, open on Thanksgiving. They usually are.

You pay one price, and can eat all you want, until you are done. I’m fairly certain they will charge the “dinner” rate, even if you go during the usual lunch time. It’s about $12.00 per adult.

If you have coupons, you can give it a shot, but I can’t promise they will honor them on Thanksgiving. I am certain that the free dinner coupon that you get for joining their eClub is NOT something you can use on a holiday (or a Sunday). Other then that particular coupon, well, it can’t hurt to try.

Upside: You can eat and drink as much as you want, and the price will remain the same. You won’t have any dishes to wash later on, and you can safely avoid the relatives you don’t happen to want to visit with today.

Downside: There will be no leftovers for you to take home. In fact, it is specifically “verboten” to bring ANY food out of the buffet when you leave. (Unless, you decided to pay for their “take out” option, which is a different story.) Also, the lines will be long, so you should plan on waiting much longer on Thanksgiving than on a “normal” day to be seated at Hometown Buffet.

* If you happen to be in San Francisco, Cafe Gratitude is planning on serving a FREE Thanksgiving dinner. This will be the fifth year they will do this.

” Meals will be served on a first come, first served basis, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.”

They are doing this as an expression of gratitude for their many customers and fans of their Vegan restaurant.

Upside: If you happen to be a Vegan, a fan of the Gratitude resturant, and in San Francisco, you can get a free Thanksgiving dinner.

Downside: You might not get in, depending on the number of people that arrive. If you aren’t a Vegan, you might be disappointed by the fact that you won’t be served turkey. And, you pretty much have to already be in San Francisco today to even have a chance of taking advantage of this offer.

* If you are reading this blog and are truly desperate and hungry this year, you can use google to find out if your area has a “food bank” or “free kitchen” or even a local shelter that can assist you. SLO Food Bank is an example that is local to me.

Upside: These places are set up for people who are extremely poor and hungry, and they will understand your need. Some of these places might even be able to provide shelter, if you have none.

Downside: No one really wants to spend Thanksgiving this way. This is a last resort, so don’t use this option unless you absolutely have no other choice. Don’t take resources away from someone else who is truly needy, if you are not.

* If you aren’t really interested in having the traditional Thanksgiving dinner, you might want to give the Chinese Buffet a call. Sometimes they are open on holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas when many places are closed. Buffets are a great place to get a lot of food for a reasonable price.

I hope everyone has a happy and safe Thanksgiving this year.

Ways to Save Some Money

Here are some things you many not know about, that can save you a bit of money as you shop, dine out, or make gift purchases right now. Consider this entry to be “Cheap Eats, and Then Some!”

I apologize, in advance, because I realize many, if not all of these tips are going to be available only to people in the United States right now. Also, I know that at least a few of these things are somewhat “California-centric”.

*Barnes & Noble wants to give you the Membership discount for things you purchase from BN.com.

I've never heard of this before. Go look up a book you are interested in buying. Next to it, you will see the "list" price, followed by the "online" price. Under that, you see something like the following:

BUY IT NEW
$28.99 List price
$18.84 Online price
$17.39 Member price
(Save 40%)
Limited Time Offer!
Everyone receives the Member Price on books.

If you click on the link to see more details, it says :
"Special Holiday Offer Details:
For a limited time, starting on Nov. 2, 2009, customers who are not Barnes & Noble Members will receive the advertised "Member Price" on bn.com only on eligible books and only at bn.com and its mirror sites. This offer is subject to change or discontinuation without notice; we will, however, honor properly placed orders with valid methods of payment with sufficient funds placed prior to such change or discontinuation, while supplies last.

Only books that display a Member Price on bn.com are eligible for this offer. The Member Price will be applied during checkout." This is, of course, followed by more fine print.

Barnes & Noble is, primarily, a bookstore, but it also sells CDs, journals, cards, calendars, and an endless array of knick-knacks. If you go into the actual "brick and mortar" stores, and buy anything at all (even from the cafe), you will get asked if you want to pay $25 dollars extra to become a "Member", and to get the slightly lower Membership price on all the stuff you buy. Most of the time, things cost one price in the stores, and a somewhat lower price if you buy it on the Barnes & Noble website instead.

Now, for a limited time, Barnes & Noble is shooting its stores in the foot with bigger bullets, as it allows customers to go online, and buy stuff for the Membership price, WITHOUT having to sheck out the extra 25 bucks to buy the Membership card! Kind of insane, but, something unemployed consumers can take advantage of. This offer is for "a limited time", and I can't find anything about when, exactly, it will end.

Shipping is free, if your order is over $25.00, which is helpful. This allowed me to ship gifts to my family in Illinois, all the way from where I live in California, at zero cost to me.

* Evos is my favorite place to eat. It air cooks the food, so you can eat fries, and burgers, and not have either one be dripping in grease.

On Sundays, the Evos I go to puts out an easel with a whiteboard in front of the store. This will tell you what deal they are doing that particular Sunday. Sometimes it has been something like “buy a Veggie Wrap and get fries and a drink free”. Last time we went, it was “Buy fries and a drink, and get Chicken Strips for free.”

Here is an example of what I mean:
evossign

Hang on to your receipts! At the bottom, you will find an offer that will say something like “Come join us from 2pm/close nightly!! FREE BURGER w/purchase of any lge value meal.”
These offers change, so take a close look at your receipt before you recycle it.

Also, my Evos gives discounts to students. You need to bring in your school ID, I think, as proof. One day is for students of the local high school, another is for students of one local college, and a third day is for students of the other local college. How nice!

* Panda Express is another place I love to eat at.
panda express

This is another wonderful fast food place that gives you a discount attached to a receipt. The front of the receipts say “FREE ENTREE ITEM”, and tells you to flip it over and read the back for full details.

It’s easy. Call a phone number, take a quick survey about your Panda experience, and they give you a code. Write down the validation code in the little box provided for you on the back of the receipt, and bring it with you next time you go to Panda Express! You have to do the survey within two days of your visit, and you have to have the actual receipt with you when you try to use it for the free entree item. This works well if you happened to be hungry enough to eat a three entree plate, and only had enough money to buy a two entree plate. Nice!

* Starbucks wants to give you something for free.

starbucks1.jpg

Spend $15 dollars at Starbucks, and, for a limited time, you get the Starbucks and (RED) exclusive CD called “All You Need Is Love”. “Enjoy exclusive songs from Playing for Change, U2, Dave Matthews and John Legend.” Somewhere on the Starbucks website is a place where you can listen to some of these songs. For every one of these CDs that Starbucks distributes, they will “contribute $1 U.S. to the Global Fund to help fight AIDS in Africa.”

So, you get a free CD, and you get to help fight AIDS in Africa. Pretty great deal! If this CD isn’t exactly your favorite style of music, perhaps it is something one of your loved ones would be excited about having as a gift this holiday season.

Free Starbucks Coffee!

What are you doing this weekend? Do you like Starbucks coffee? How would you like some for free? Here is how!

Starbucks wants you to “Take the Starbucks Via challenge”.
starbucksVia

Starbucks Via Ready Brew is a new instant version of Starbucks coffee. They want you to do a blind taste test of the traditional Starbucks coffee, and the new Starbucks Via Ready Brew, and see which one is better. Can you tell the difference?

It reminds me of “The Pepsi Challenge” from back in the day. Except, both the regular Starbucks coffee and the Starbucks Via Ready Brew are both made by Starbucks.

So, basically, it works like this:

*Go in to a Starbucks starting on Friday October 2, 2009, and ending on Monday, October 5, 2009.

* Tell them you want to take “The Starbucks Via Challenge”. From what I can tell, this means the barista should hand you not one, but two, mini cups of coffee. You taste both, and figure out which one tastes better to you. Let them know what you decide.

* Get handed a coupon for a FREE, tall, brewed coffee. You have to use the coupon “on your next visit”, and you have to bring in the actual coupon card they hand you when you go. Sounds good to me!

Go here to find a Starbucks near you. Somehow, I don’t think you are going to have any problem finding one!

I am going to try this out, and I will let you know how this goes.

Taco Roco has “Taco Tuesdays”

Taco Roco is one of my favorite restaurants that serves Mexican food. Everything I’ve had there is consistently yummy. There is one near where I live, so I have been there quite a few times in the past. I recommend it!

Taco Roco is another place to go for “Cheap Eats”. Food that tastes good, for not too much money!

On Tuesdays, you will find signs like these:
SoftTacoSpecial

TacoTuesdays

PRICE:
Shawn and I went and got two steak tacos, each, and we split a soda. It cost us under ten bucks, and we even got free chips and salsa.

This is because we went on a Tuesday, after 3 in the afternoon. You can select from a few different choices of meat for your tacos, including steak and pork. (If you want fish tacos on Tuesday, it’s going to cost you two dollars, instead of one). I haven’t tried to see if Taco Tuesday can include veggie tacos, so I’ve no idea if they will do that. My best guess is they will, but if this is your plan, you may want to call ahead to check before you go to the restaurant.

Even when it is not Tuesday, the food here is not super expensive. But, Tuesdays are wonderful when you are short on money.

MORE INFO:
You can go to their official website and to find out if there is a location near you. Unfortunately, unless you live on the Central Coast of California, you won’t find a Taco Roco close to where you live. However, if you do happen to live here, you can order food from Taco Roco directly from the website, which is kind of nice.

FOOD:
They serve food you would expect from a Mexican food resturant. Tacos, Burritos, Tortas, Quesadillas, and Nachos. They also have combination orders which include a main item, along with rice and beans. There is a Kid’s menu, (Los NiƱos). Taco Roco has a couple of dessert items, and it even serves Breakfast, until 11:30 in the morning. There is even a Breakfast menu for the kids.

For more details about the exact menu items, you can go to their official website, and take a look. The prices don’t seem to be listed there, however. But, it does have some nice pictures of the food.

Even with all my food allergies, I can find a lot of things to eat at Taco Roco. My favorite is the fish tacos, which you can choose to get either breaded (fried), or grilled. They do serve some items with shrimp, so avoid those if you have shellfish allergies. I have problems with dairy foods, but so far, none of the food I have tried at Taco Roco has enough cheese on it to bother me. (Needless to say, I cannot try the Quesadillas).

Vegetarians can enjoy the veggie burrito, which is really good. (I eat it fairly often myself). Another option would be the Bean and Cheese burrito. (This is also available from the Kid’s Menu). You can also get some “Crispy Tacos” made with potato instead of meat. Or, you can also get a Quesadilla, and choose not to add meat, (which costs an extra dollar anyway.)

I’m not sure what Diabetics can eat here, because I am seeing a whole lot of carbs. Their two dessert items almost certainly have sugar in them. They do offer a “Fresca Salad”, but I’m not sure what is in it. If you plan on doing Taco Tuesday, I cannot see how you can do it without eating the carbs from the tortillas.

OTHER NICE THINGS:

* They often play Mexican music in the restaurant for diners to enjoy.

* You don’t have to dress up to eat here.

* Families are welcome. They also seem receptive to large groups.

* If you go to the official Taco Roco webpage, and click on “Kids”, you can download and print out a coloring page for your kids to do. They can color “Rocky” the parrot mascot of Taco Roco. Rocky reminds me of an old Disney cartoon, where Donald Duck, and a parrot, and some other cartoon bird were dressed up in sombreros and serapes. The link didn’t happen to be working as I was typing this blog, but it might be by the time you read this.

Hometown Buffet

It goes by many names. Hometown Buffet, Country Buffet, Old Country Buffet…. it’s all the same. Where I am at in California, it is called Hometown Buffet, but where I used to live in Illinois, it was called Old Country Buffet. I’ve no idea why the name is different in different locations, but it is. Same place, no matter which of it’s aliases it happens to be going by where you live.

They all pretty much look like this:
HometownBuffet

As far as I know, this chain of Buffet is only found in the good ol’ USA, land of obesity. If you live somewhere else, and there is one by you, let me know. What name does it call itself over there?

Hometown Buffet is the first in a series I’m going to call “Cheap Eats”, (places you can get decent food at without spending a lot of money). Buffets are great because you pay one price, and you can eat and drink whatever you want to, for as long as you want to, and the price does not change. I have a feeling Buffets are going to become more attractive to me in the near future.

MORE INFO:
Here is the official website for this chain of Buffets. It has catchy music that starts immediately when you get to the page. Go directly to the top right hand corner, and click the conveniently located button that says “Click To Stop”, before it makes you crazy.

There is a “Restaurant Locator” you can click to find the one nearest to where you live. It even tells you the hours it’s open, for each day of the week. Most of these buffets serve lunch and dinner, but some also serve breakfast on certain days.

PRICE:
Not too bad. Shawn and I went for lunch the other day, and it cost us a little under twenty bucks total. The price is somewhat higher for dinner, and I’ve no idea what it is for breakfast.

If you are age 60 or over, you can purchase a “Senior Club Card” for one dollar, and get a discount. (The website doesn’t say how much, except that it will be at least fifty cents).

You can go to their website and “Join the eClub”. This says it will give you one free buffet meal if you buy one buffet meal, just because you signed up. It also claims it will send you “updates and discounts” in your email, and mentions a “Birthday Coupon”. I signed up, and I will let you know how that goes.

The receipt from our meal says “Enter for a chance to win $1,000 dollars”, if you call their survey. Wish me luck!

This buffet chain also is kind enough to include coupons in local circulars that you get in the mail.

FOOD:
It’s good. This is not gourmet, of course, but it is good as far as buffet food goes. Overall, it tends to run on the lighter side of the seasoning spectrum, but it is not bland. There is a large salad bar, with lots of different vegetables to select, and another salad bar with things like potato salad and stuff. The other three large buffet tables have a variety of things on them to choose from. Expect comfort foods like mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese. One of these tables will usually have somebody carving meat. They often choose a “theme”, (like Seafood, or Italian, etc.) so you might find slightly different choices depending on what night you are there. They also have a soft serve ice cream dispenser, and a dessert bar.

I have tons of food allergies, and I have no problems at all finding food I can eat at Hometown Buffet. If I can manage to do that, everybody else should have no problem working around their allergies. I’m more severe than nearly everyone I’ve ever met. I think diabetics would do just fine here, thanks to the wide variety of food choices available. Quite a few of the deserts are sugar free, which is nice.

I’m not really a vegetarian, but I like to eat that way fairly often. I really like the salad bar at this buffet. In addition to the salad bar, there usually is one or two cooked vegetable choices, such as carrots or corn, and they always have yummy mashed potatoes. Garlic bread is often on the menu, as is Macaroni and Cheese. Last time we went they had Grilled Cheese Sandwiches which Shawn said were pretty good. (I’m allergic to dairy, or I would have eaten one myself). If you happen to be vegan, I’m not sure if there is much you can eat here. You can go to their website and click “Menu” and then “Specific Diet Choices” for more information.

OTHER NICE THINGS:
You are not expected to dress up to eat here.

It is family friendly. Thursday night is “Family Night”, “Featuring several kid-friendly items such as chicken strips, pizza, macaroni and cheese, and banana splits for dessert.” In my experience, you might also find the mascot of the buffet, a human sized Bee, and there may or may not be balloons involved. So, if you have kids, bring them on Thursday nights. If you want to avoid children, don’t go on Thursday nights.
