Better read this quick

Tuesday, March 23, 2010, is a great day to go to Starbucks.

starbucks1.jpg

Starbucks is giving away free pastries. Yummy!

Here’s what you have to do to get one:
* Go to Starbucks on March 23, 2010, anytime between when they open, and 10:30 in the morning.

* Purchase a “handcrafted” beverage.

* Give the barista the right coupon. Need one? Go here , and print out a copy for yourself.

Apparently, Starbucks is doing this “just because”. Awww…. how sweet!

If you are someone who heads to Starbucks on your way to work, this coupon can make your trip a little bit less expensive today.

Personally, I’m not a morning person. It’s unlikely that I will be awake early enough to go take advantage of this opportunity. I work part time from home, so I don’t make a practice of heading to Starbucks before starting my work day.

However…. since I don’t have anything specific to do tomorrow….. I could just stay up, and sleep after I eat my free pastry. I will blog again sometime tomorrow, to let you know how that went.

UPDATE: I am writing this on Tuesday, March 23, sometime around 3:00 in the afternoon. Yeah, I slept right through the time frame that Starbucks was offering a free pastry. No, I didn’t sleep until 3:00 in the afternoon.

Need Free Wi Fi?

It’s getting close to Christmas. If you are unemployed, or underemployed, you might find that the postal cost of sending out all those Christmas cards is just more than your budget will allow right now. Sending an email is free, but, you need internet access for that, and paying for access to the internet at your house might be another extra expense you can’t afford right now either.

What to do?

Well, if you happen to have an iphone, or a laptop with wi-fi, (likely purchased before you had the slightest inkling that you were about to lose your job), then you are in luck!

Here is a short list of stores that offer free wi-fi. Go there, log on, send a holiday greeting in the form of email to your loved ones! Send them one of the many Christmas related shiny objects found in the many apps on facebook. Let them know you are still alive, and doing fine (well, except for that little problem of not having a job).

* Barnes & Noble
I found this on their own website. It actually says “No fees. No charges. Just log on.” Of course, you have to have your own laptop, because Barnes & Noble has never offered computers for customers to use.

This is somewhat new, because I know for a fact that Barnes & Noble used to use AT&T for as their wi-fi provider, and AT&T would charge people to use it. But now? It seems to be free. Give it a try! Just don’t sit in their cafe and do it, unless you continually make purchases of coffee and pastries from the cafe, or you run the risk of getting kicked out of the cafe. The wi-fi may be free, but, seems you need to “pay rent” to use the cafe chairs and tables.

* Apple Retail Stores

If you happen to have an iphone, you get access to free wi-fi automatically, as soon as you walk into any Apple Retail Store. Nice!

What if you don’t have an iphone? Well… the Apple Retail Stores are set up for people to come in and play around with and “test out” their computers. Look around, and you are likely to see ten year olds logging on to stupid game sites, and challenging each other to a grudge match, using the Apple Store’s demo computers.

What harm could it be to log into your hotmail account, and send a quick email to Mom and Dad, letting them know that you aren’t dead yet, (but still unemployed)? I wouldn’t make a practice of using their computers that way, but, desperate times call for desperate measures. And, it’s legal!

* McDonalds

McDonalds offers free wi-fi at 1200 locations in the UK. Go in, order yourself a Big Mac or something, sit down, and log on.

Starting in January 2010, McDonalds will offer free wi-fi for it’s stores in the USA, as well. It’s not in time for Christmas this year, but still, is something to keep in mind.

So, if you can stand to be at a McDonalds, with the strange grease smell, and the gaggle of loud and unattended children and tween-agers, you can get free wi-fi! Just make sure you check the table closely for cleanliness before you put your lap top into a mess. It goes without saying that McDonalds is NOT going to supply it’s customers with computers to use. Even if they did though, who would want to touch those? I picture them covered in ketchup.

* Starbucks

Starbucks is sort of offering free wi-fi. They want you to purchase one of their gift cards, and register it online, first. Then, (if you continue to use your registered gift card at least once a month), you get two hours of free wi-fi, each and every day. So, if you are unemployed, but still getting your Starbucks fix anyway, it makes sense to get yourself a gift card, register it, and use that when you come in. Then you can drink your coffee or frap, and surf the net for two hours each and every day.

On the other hand, if you don’t happen to like Starbucks, and you hardly ever go there… this offer isn’t going to do much for you. And, once again, you need to bring your own laptop and/or iphone with you to use the free wi-fi.

* Here is a lovely list of more stores that offer free (or almost free) wi-fi. You can click around on it to find more details. There is also a link called “Return to Directory States List” (at the bottom of the page) that will allow you to look at a list of places with free wi-fi just for your state.

You can also search a list for:
Europe
Canada
Caribbean, Mexico, Central and South America
The Middle East and Africa
Asia
or
Australia, New Zealand, and The South Pacific

* One more idea: Most Public Libraries have computers that they allow patrons to use. You will have to check in your area to find out if details on that such as if you must have a library card before you can use one, if it is free, or if it actually is connected to the internet.

Know of another store that offers free wi-fi? Leave a comment in the blog, for everybody who comes along to check out.

Ways to Save Some Money

Here are some things you many not know about, that can save you a bit of money as you shop, dine out, or make gift purchases right now. Consider this entry to be “Cheap Eats, and Then Some!”

I apologize, in advance, because I realize many, if not all of these tips are going to be available only to people in the United States right now. Also, I know that at least a few of these things are somewhat “California-centric”.

*Barnes & Noble wants to give you the Membership discount for things you purchase from BN.com.

I've never heard of this before. Go look up a book you are interested in buying. Next to it, you will see the "list" price, followed by the "online" price. Under that, you see something like the following:

BUY IT NEW
$28.99 List price
$18.84 Online price
$17.39 Member price
(Save 40%)
Limited Time Offer!
Everyone receives the Member Price on books.

If you click on the link to see more details, it says :
"Special Holiday Offer Details:
For a limited time, starting on Nov. 2, 2009, customers who are not Barnes & Noble Members will receive the advertised "Member Price" on bn.com only on eligible books and only at bn.com and its mirror sites. This offer is subject to change or discontinuation without notice; we will, however, honor properly placed orders with valid methods of payment with sufficient funds placed prior to such change or discontinuation, while supplies last.

Only books that display a Member Price on bn.com are eligible for this offer. The Member Price will be applied during checkout." This is, of course, followed by more fine print.

Barnes & Noble is, primarily, a bookstore, but it also sells CDs, journals, cards, calendars, and an endless array of knick-knacks. If you go into the actual "brick and mortar" stores, and buy anything at all (even from the cafe), you will get asked if you want to pay $25 dollars extra to become a "Member", and to get the slightly lower Membership price on all the stuff you buy. Most of the time, things cost one price in the stores, and a somewhat lower price if you buy it on the Barnes & Noble website instead.

Now, for a limited time, Barnes & Noble is shooting its stores in the foot with bigger bullets, as it allows customers to go online, and buy stuff for the Membership price, WITHOUT having to sheck out the extra 25 bucks to buy the Membership card! Kind of insane, but, something unemployed consumers can take advantage of. This offer is for "a limited time", and I can't find anything about when, exactly, it will end.

Shipping is free, if your order is over $25.00, which is helpful. This allowed me to ship gifts to my family in Illinois, all the way from where I live in California, at zero cost to me.

* Evos is my favorite place to eat. It air cooks the food, so you can eat fries, and burgers, and not have either one be dripping in grease.

On Sundays, the Evos I go to puts out an easel with a whiteboard in front of the store. This will tell you what deal they are doing that particular Sunday. Sometimes it has been something like “buy a Veggie Wrap and get fries and a drink free”. Last time we went, it was “Buy fries and a drink, and get Chicken Strips for free.”

Here is an example of what I mean:
evossign

Hang on to your receipts! At the bottom, you will find an offer that will say something like “Come join us from 2pm/close nightly!! FREE BURGER w/purchase of any lge value meal.”
These offers change, so take a close look at your receipt before you recycle it.

Also, my Evos gives discounts to students. You need to bring in your school ID, I think, as proof. One day is for students of the local high school, another is for students of one local college, and a third day is for students of the other local college. How nice!

* Panda Express is another place I love to eat at.
panda express

This is another wonderful fast food place that gives you a discount attached to a receipt. The front of the receipts say “FREE ENTREE ITEM”, and tells you to flip it over and read the back for full details.

It’s easy. Call a phone number, take a quick survey about your Panda experience, and they give you a code. Write down the validation code in the little box provided for you on the back of the receipt, and bring it with you next time you go to Panda Express! You have to do the survey within two days of your visit, and you have to have the actual receipt with you when you try to use it for the free entree item. This works well if you happened to be hungry enough to eat a three entree plate, and only had enough money to buy a two entree plate. Nice!

* Starbucks wants to give you something for free.

starbucks1.jpg

Spend $15 dollars at Starbucks, and, for a limited time, you get the Starbucks and (RED) exclusive CD called “All You Need Is Love”. “Enjoy exclusive songs from Playing for Change, U2, Dave Matthews and John Legend.” Somewhere on the Starbucks website is a place where you can listen to some of these songs. For every one of these CDs that Starbucks distributes, they will “contribute $1 U.S. to the Global Fund to help fight AIDS in Africa.”

So, you get a free CD, and you get to help fight AIDS in Africa. Pretty great deal! If this CD isn’t exactly your favorite style of music, perhaps it is something one of your loved ones would be excited about having as a gift this holiday season.

Free Starbucks Coffee?

In an earlier post I wrote about a “challenge” that Starbucks is doing right now. Remember this?:
starbucksVia

Today, Shawn and I went to a local Starbucks to take the “VIA Challenge”, and get the free coffee that Starbucks offers in the above ad.

On the counter where you place your order you will see this:
StarbucksViaChallenge
Here, on a little round tray, you see two little pitchers of coffee, one sitting on each side of the color coded advertisement. One is the “regular” brewed coffee, and the other is Starbucks new “VIA” instant brewed coffee. This is where you need to go if you want to take the “Challenge”.

It’s pretty easy to spot. First, when we arrived at the Starbucks, we saw several advertisements on the windows and doors about this new Challenge. We nearly walked into a strategically placed display that had packages of the new Via instant coffee on it.

You can purchase three packets of VIA in a cute little origami folded package for about three bucks, or a larger package of 12 packets for about ten bucks. (I may be wrong about the price of the larger package). There are two different kinds of VIA you can purchase. One is called “Columbia” and is “medium”, and is in the orange packets. The red packets offered a stronger VIA coffee, but I can’t recall the name of that one right now.

Also, all the Baristas were wearing bright orange aprons, that had something printed on the front about the “VIA Challenge”. I think that even if you did not get information about this in email, didn’t see any television commercials, and also somehow managed to avoid all mention of Starbucks new ad campaign to introduce it’s instant coffee online, you still would be able to figure out that there was a “VIA Challenge” going on the minute you entered the Starbucks.

Here is how that works:
* Ask the Barista if you can take the VIA Challenge. They are more than happy to assist with that. They will explain what it is (in case you really had no idea), and offer you two little tiny dixie cups of coffee. One is the “regular” and one is the “VIA”. Which is which? Try them and see.

* When the dixie cups of coffee cool, smell them, taste them, try them both. The Barista at the Starbucks I went to was kind enough to offer me some ice cubes to put in the dixie cups, so the coffee would cool down faster, and I could taste test it faster. Enjoy your double shots of free coffee! Savor the lovely caffeine buzz.

I could not tell the difference between the two different coffees, (surprise, surprise), but Shawn could. He noted that one was “less bitter and more smooth” than the other, and he liked that one better. Shawn picked the VIA as having the best taste. We let the helpful Barista know what we thought about it, and he told us a little more about the new VIA coffee.

NOTE: It turns out that simply taking the “VIA Challenge” does NOT automatically get you a coupon for a free coffee on your next visit. Did I read the ad wrong? I really thought it did.

It turns out that in order to get the coupon for “one FREE tall brewed coffee on your next visit” you have to make a purchase of VIA.
StarbucksVia

We decided to buy a three packet package of VIA coffee. We chose the Colombia style, because that is the kind we tried in the taste test, and Shawn liked it. He is thinking about drinking coffee in the mornings when he works, and didn’t really want to brew an entire pot just for him, so he decided to give VIA a try. The VIA comes in little one cup packets, perfect for somebody who just wants a cup of coffee, without all the fuss.

Once we made that purchase, the helpful Barista was able to give us the coupon we heard about in the ad. The photo shows a paper that says “Thank You”. Inside that folded paper is the coupon we came in to get, and also another coupon for “$1 off Starbucks VIA Ready Brew”.

In other words, you do get free coffee. The coffee they hand you to take the Challenge with is free. However, the coupon for a “One FREE tall brewed coffee on your next visit” only is given if you buy the new VIA first. It’s a little misleading, but it ultimately worked out for us.

Do you want to go take the Starbucks VIA Challenge? You still can. They are doing this promotion until October 5, 2009.

Free Starbucks Coffee!

What are you doing this weekend? Do you like Starbucks coffee? How would you like some for free? Here is how!

Starbucks wants you to “Take the Starbucks Via challenge”.
starbucksVia

Starbucks Via Ready Brew is a new instant version of Starbucks coffee. They want you to do a blind taste test of the traditional Starbucks coffee, and the new Starbucks Via Ready Brew, and see which one is better. Can you tell the difference?

It reminds me of “The Pepsi Challenge” from back in the day. Except, both the regular Starbucks coffee and the Starbucks Via Ready Brew are both made by Starbucks.

So, basically, it works like this:

*Go in to a Starbucks starting on Friday October 2, 2009, and ending on Monday, October 5, 2009.

* Tell them you want to take “The Starbucks Via Challenge”. From what I can tell, this means the barista should hand you not one, but two, mini cups of coffee. You taste both, and figure out which one tastes better to you. Let them know what you decide.

* Get handed a coupon for a FREE, tall, brewed coffee. You have to use the coupon “on your next visit”, and you have to bring in the actual coupon card they hand you when you go. Sounds good to me!

Go here to find a Starbucks near you. Somehow, I don’t think you are going to have any problem finding one!

I am going to try this out, and I will let you know how this goes.
